Edible Garden

Episode: #3 16/09/2006
Presenter: Fiona Bruyn

Gardening is not difficult and at Eden Gardens you can see how easy it is to grow your own veges and herbs. Whether you have acreage, a courtyard or even a balcony it is possible to grow your own herbs and veges in even the smallest of spaces.

The edible garden section of Eden Gardens has displays showing you a variety of ways to grow enough to give to your friends and family.

For those with a backyard full of concrete that is difficult to remove and has soil underneath that definitely wont be good for growing anything then there is a simple solution. It is called a no dig garden and all you need are a few sleepers to retain the organic rich soil that your veges need to grow. It is also perfect for people with difficult to dig clay soil or rocky ground.

Practically anything that holds soil can be used to contain your edible garden. For the lazy gardener you don't even have to empty the potting mix out of the bag when you get it home, tomatoes will grow very happily right in the bag!

Don?t forget to add a few holes to the sides for drainage or you will end up with a swimming pool for your plants.

A large pot is the conventional way of growing plants and can also be used for edibles, just remember hungry veges need to be fed and watered regularly for a continuous crop. Herbs are not as demanding.

Nasty bugs will love feasting on the greens as much as you do. You can control them without using chemicals, by simply adding a few companion plants; their flowers make a great show too.

If don't have time to create an edible garden yourself then Eden gardens would love to help, just contact Eden Outdoors .

You can learn more on how to create your own vege patch at Eden gardens tomorrow, the 17th September, 2006, with a free talk. There is also an Organic food and farmers market at Eden every Friday.
