Australia's natives are very unique and diverse and really set us apart as a nation. Natives don't require too much looking after but the more you give them the better they will look. So with spring in the air, why not get out and fertilize those natives.
Garden Gold is specially formulated for our native plants, containing a mix of slow release and fast release nutrients, which are gentle for all our native varieties. Garden gold also has the added benefit of a wetting agent which helps to carry the nutrients down to the roots and prevent run off.
Most Australian natives don't like too much phosphorous, even though there are some that do cope with it. To be on the safe side always use a fertiliser like Garden Gold as it is specially formulated for natives.
A light trim after flowering will keep your bush nice and compact avoiding that leggy look. Grevilleas are one of the most popular Australian natives for the home gardens, with some of the bloom varieties having Queensland origins. The hybrids, which include Grevillea Honey Gem and Robin Gordon, make fantastic garden shrubs and also appreciated as export cut flowers. Cutting the flowers at home is good for the plant and encourages fresh, new growth for next season.
Spring is a great time of year to start thinking about rolling out a new lawn. There are many new draught hardy varieties now available.'Sir Walter' and'Sealsle' are two great varieties for Queensland's sub tropical climate.
Sir Walter will grow with very little sunlight, making it ideal for growing under trees. While Sealsle can handle high levels of salty water, polluted water or even grey water, which makes it ideal for coastal situations.
If you are concerned about watering your new lawn then the good news is you can water new turf in Brisbane during level 3 water restrictions. Just check with the experts at Jimboomba to get all the details.
