Western Australia is treasure chest of beautiful wild flowers that are admired across the globe. However, growing them in the home environment has been considered too hard. Kings Park horticulturists have got some simple tips to enable you to grow some native plants in your own garden, where ever you live! Tip number one is concerning soil. Lay down a whole load of new, clean sand on the site and put the new plants straight into it without any further soil preparation which leaves gutless, free draining sand. The size of the plants you use can also determine the amount of success you have. Using small tube stock or tube plants as highly recommended as they are not yet root bound and will establish brilliantly in their new home. Mulching is another secret of success and the team at Kings park use woodchips and shredded green waste at a 50mm depth. There a variety of different plants that you can choose from but going to a specialist native plant nursery for advice is recommended. If you would like to see the best of the worlds wild flowers then you need to go to the Kings Park Wildflower Festival which runs for five days from September 28th - October 2nd from 9am - 5pm.
