Kick Start your Lawn

Episode: #1 30/08/06 Proudly Presented byYates
Presenter: Sue McDougall
The most popular types of lawn grown in Western Australia are called lawn season grasses. These are the couch and buffalo cultivars. They thrive in the warm weather but at this time of year tend to look a little yellow and tired. Give them a kick start to keep them looking gorgeous over spring and summer. Grab some Thrive Granular Lawn Food and spread it all around and you will see a sad looking lawn turn green over a period of about a week or two. The most important feature is that Thrive Granular Lawn Food will encourage strong root development and this is what will make a difference to your lawn in summer when the hot weather sets in. The key to a gorgeous lawn and healthy river system is feeding the lawn regularly, every 6 ? 8 weeks throughout the growing season of September to May. Try not to feed the lawn at the beginning of spring and then forget about it as the fertiliser will end up leaching pass the root system of the lawn and into the rivers. Some lawns are so infested with weeds that it can be difficult to see the actual grass so we need to treat the broadleaf weeds before they go to seed. Broadleaf weed killers work by sitting on a plants foliage and getting absorbed over a period of time and because of its mode of action many of the products that are on the market, that contain dicamba, such as Zero Bindi and Clover are suited for couch lawns but a re not safe for buffalo and kikuyu. For a buffalo lawn you need to use a product that contains bromoxynil. It will be written on the label so make sure you check! If you have limited time and find that treating the weeds and fertilising is taking up too much time there are products on the market that will do the two jobs at once. Yates Granular Weed and Feed works brilliantly on thistles and dandelions. In about two days the weeds will die and the lawns will get greener. The granular formulation contains iron sulphate so it is suited for buffalo lawns; just steer clear of paving because it can stain. It might turn your lawn black for a couple of days but it will recover beautifully and only use the liquid formulation on couch lawns.
