Darren gives some helpful tips about how to best look after your soil with mulch.
- Mulching keeps soil healthy by acting as a protective blanket from the sun. This keeps it cooler, slows its evaporation, protects microbes and prevents weeds.
- Before mulching, you should apply a wetting agent and fertiliser.
- Choosing mulch that's comprised of coarse and irregular sized particles will allow water to quickly reach the soil below where it’s required.
- Apply the mulch as a layer 50mm to 100mm thick, thinning out as you get closer to any plant trunks or stems.
- A feeding mulch such as Pea Straw or Triple C is recommended for veggie beds and productive gardens.
- Potted plants should also be mulched for the same reasons as garden beds; however, you may need to take a little more care in keeping the mulch off the trunks.
