Citrus Trees
Story: Citrus Trees
Episode: 16

Air Date: 29 November 2025
Darren shows you how to properly look after your citrus in the warmer months, ensuring healthy, fruitful trees in the cooler months.
- Most varieties of citrus produce crops in winter, however, how they are treated in the warmer months will dictate how fruitful they are.
- When flowers and small fruit form it's an important to maintain the plant’s moisture level in the soil as too much variation will cause stress and may cause the fruit and flowers to fall off. Using a wetting agent and a layer mulch will help to maintain this moisture level.
- A controlled release fertiliser will provide citrus adequate nutrition to form and carry fruit to ripening. You can supplement with the occasional liquid fertiliser but be careful not to overdo it as this may push the plant into growth mode at the expense of the fruit.
- Growing citrus in pots is a great option if you’re limited on space, especially because many varieties are sold in dwarf forms and are naturally more compact.
- Citruses are a great addition to any suburban garden and while their fruit typically ripens in winter, it's important to look after them in the water months.
